Dealing With Pregnancy Back Pain

Pregnancy can be both a wonderful and difficult time. Many women enjoy feeling their baby move and bonding with him before he is born, but less fun are the physical ailments that plague many women during their pregnancy. Back ache, dizziness, sickness, joint pain and other conditions brought on by pregnancy can make getting a comfortable night’s sleep difficult which in turn can make you even more tired and uncomfortable during the day.

Back ache is one of the most common pregnancy complaints with many women suffering from it from early in their pregnancy, right the way through to the time the baby is born and beyond. The most common cause of back ache is due to the loosening of ligaments and joints due to pregnancy hormones to prepare the body for birth. This combined with excess weight from the growing baby can cause a painful lower back and hips which is often worse first thing in the morning after lying down all night.

There are a number of steps you can take to prevent back pain or stop it from becoming worse once it has developed. Keeping active is one of the best ways to keep your muscles and joints moving so they do not become overstretched, causing pain. Walking, swimming and prenatal yoga are all great exercises when you’re pregnant.

You may also want to try some daily back stretch exercise. An easy and very useful exercise is to kneel on all fours and alternately round and arch your back. This will stretch out the muscles and can provide great relief for back pain as well as preventing stiffness in the hip joints.

As your bump grows larger you may well find that a pregnancy support belt will help greatly to support you back in carrying the excess weight. Wearing a support belt every day can help ease back pain and prevent further strain on your back.
