Mothers and Living Up to the ‘Celebrity’ Image

Keeping the house shipshape, juggling a job, serving up home-cooked feasts, looking after kiddies and making romantic time for her partner is enough to fill any mother’s hectic day.

It’s no wonder Mother’s Day was created, a day on which children can spoil their mum with choccies, flowers and other such luxuries.

When you add ‘looking flawless all the time’ into the mix, the ‘being-a-mum-schedule’ looks even more intimidating.

Having said that, Madonna manages it. So do Angelina Jolie, Nicole Ritchie and Victoria Beckham.

The average mother can feel a little less than perfect when compared to the likes of these domestic goddesses.

From fashionable mums, to stay-at-home mums, to celebrities, every lady with fickle ones longs for Mothers Day… that special day that’s all about her. Which mum wouldn’t want to be lavished with special Mothers Day gifts, not to mention affection, appreciation and attention from the people that matter most in her life?

A recent survey revealed a number of mums believe celebrities such as Madonna, Pamela Anderson, and Sarah Jessica Parker are putting mothers under strain to match an unlikely model.

Many mums say they feel an obligation to look good and feel sexy for their partner while others say they feel pressured to be a successful career woman as well.

Let’s be reminded that these seemingly perfect yummy mummy celebs get round-the-clock baby help from a whole host of staff, stylists, minders, PAs, drivers and runners to ensure the smooth running of their public lives.

Many mums these days feel like second-rate citizens, believing that when out and about, they’re seen as a mum first and woman second. Oh dearie me. What’s more, some mums say their man no longer notices them since they’ve had a child and claim their pets are the ones who make them feel most valued. Boo hoo.

Owing to celebs and the ‘yummy mummy’ image that’s been forced on society, it’s no surprise mothers of today are feeling the weight of motherhood; it alters expectations and attitudes towards the role as ‘mum.’ Naturally, this unrealistic view of how mums should appear leaves mums feeling disheartened with their own lives.

On another note, at least Mother’s Day 2012 – the day dedicated to mums across the globe – is just around the corner, a day on which mums everywhere should be honoured and bequeathed with some chic and unique Mothers Day gifts.

So long they aren’t given presents like toilet brushes, aprons, vacuum cleaners, cleaning pots, or even worse, breakfast in bed way too early, March 18th is a day mums worldwide should be treated like a superstar and realise how amazing they, celebrity or not.

Mother’s Day falls on March 18th this year. Struggling for unique Mothers Day gifts?
